PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED BACILLUS PROBIOTICS IN MARINE FISH CULTURE

Aquaculture is developing and intensifying in most regions of the world in response to the increasing demand for aquatic food products. This intensification has led to an increased use and misuse of drugs and chemicals in aquaculture, with resulting food safety concerns. Microbial products are seen as, among other things, alternatives to the prophylactic use of chemicals (Moriarty et al., 2005). However, the presence of poor quality probiotics in the market and the misunderstandings regarding their functions have given rise to doubts about their efficacy.
