Until recently, screening and diagnosis of shrimp viral and bacterial pathogens required the back-up of a laboratory and well-trained staff. Due to the laborious procedures used andthe often long distance between the labs and the farming areas, delivery of the analytical results could take more than one week, resulting rather in a "post mortem" diagnosis that did not allow any intervention anymore. As a result, most of the disease outbreaks were not diagnosed.
